GEOMESH and MeshCAST a model of the electrode filling and solidifying has been established to get the simulated diameter of center shrinkage cavity being 248mm
as compared with measured value the relative error is 4.6%. Results show that as the electrode is located upside down
the diameter of shrinkage cavity decreases by 32.2% ; with increasing the length of insulation board the shrinkage cavity reduces
and with increasing the length of insulation board by 200mm
the shrinkage cavity below hot top is basically eliminated.
